Wood, metals, cowrie shells, fiber, raffia, gourds, beads, and feathers. Standing male figure with carved eye and elongated nose, cowrie shells embedded around forehead and fiber headdress, shoulders with protrusions including feathers, fiber necklaces with beads and shell, arms resting straight at sides, slightly protruding abdomen, fibrous ropes with shells and gourds encircle the figure at various points; raffia skirt around waist, stocky lower limbs slightly bent at the knees with feet lightly carved on circular base. Surface shows encrusted dirt and other materials.

Kongo Power Figure (Nkisi N'kondi), 19th/20th C, 28"H, "..., a sculptor constructed the figure as an empty receptacle. A second specialist, known as the nganga, then ?empowered" the vessel by inserting bilongo (medicines composed of a secret combination of animal, plant, and mineral substances) into key locations to create the power figure, or nkisi. A nkisi with its body packed full of hardware (known as a nkisi nkondi) was employed in ceremonies conducted by the nganga for the benefit of society, maintaining law and order by punishing those who disturbed the life of the community. Each piece of metal served as a permanent, material record of an event as well as a deterrent to future crimes."

- A Nkisi Nkondi Power Figure Congo
A Nkisi Nkondi Power Figure Congo Carved wood figure with attached cow bone inserted metal sheaths mirrors glass and cloth on head. Empowering substances are enclosed inside the figure allowing the priest or subscriber to use it for ill-omens or for protective help from those who would harm. The figure shows an 'oath taking' gesture with one arm upraised. At one point the figure probably held a blade or baaka an ancient kind of knife used for extracting the milk of the palm wine tree in the upraised arm. The blade was believed to have the power to kill by supernatural means and analogously the word baaka as a verb meant not only to extract wine but to demolish or destroy (Thompson 1978: 216-217).
